Eliminating Epidemic Meningitis in Africa Project

The Plan

The Eliminating Epidemic Meningitis in Africa Project is unfolding in three stages.

Stage 1
Develop, test and license an affordable conjugate Meningitis A vaccine.
This stage is almost complete, thanks to vaccine development initiatives currently underway, such as the Meningitis Vaccine Project. (To find out more about MVP and the Meningitis A vaccine, visit www.meningvax.org)

Current Status
Field tests of the MVP vaccine are currently underway. Certification of the vaccine by the World Health Organization is pending.

Stage 2
Establish a mass vaccination program in the country of Burkina Faso.
The goal of this stage is to inoculate 9 million children and young adults and demonstrate how such a program can be duplicated and expanded throughout Africa's meningitis belt.

Current Status
ChildAlive is helping to raise the funds to purchase vaccines for the vaccination program. The first campaign is scheduled in the fall of 2009.

Stage 3
Establish mass vaccination programs to vaccinate people in the remaining 20 meningitis belt countries. This final phase is contingent on the successful completion of Stage 2.

Current Status
The GAVI Alliance has committed its support for this final stage of the project.

Stage 2 is the pivotal stage of the Eliminating Epidemic Meningitis in Africa Project and the key focus of ChildAlive’s efforts.
