The Malaria Prevention Project

Each year, malaria kills more than a million children younger than five, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa.

One child dies every 30 seconds in Africa from malaria. In the country of Burkina Faso, malaria is the main cause of death among children under age five.

And yet it is one of the world’s most preventable diseases. According to the WHO Global Malaria Programme, using pesticide-treated mosquito bed nets and window and door curtains significantly reduces the number of fatalities. These nets also reduce the number of malaria-related miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women and the percentage of low birth-weight newborns.

Several charitable organizations have launched programs to distribute pesticide-treated bed nets throughout many countries in Africa. ChildAlive is focusing its efforts in Burkina Faso, where we have already built local partnerships as part of the Eliminating Epidemic Meningitis in Africa Project.

We are purchasing and distributing pesticide-treated bed nets and window and door curtains to the country’s most at-risk population: pregnant women and young children in Burkina Faso. Studies indicate that even providing protection to a partial segment of the population can help end malaria in an entire region. We’re reaching out to in-country partners, health organizations and the public to assist us in this work.

With an estimated seven million children under the age of 14 in Burkina Faso there is much work to be done to prevent the transmission of malaria, but ChildAlive is paving the way.
